How do I know if I’m pregnant again after taking the abortion pill?

Pregnancy after abortion pill

Ask the Dr.

How do I know if I’m pregnant again after taking the abortion pill?

Question: I took the abortion pill in early October. The doctor said I was 6 weeks pregnant. It’s been about 3 weeks since I took the pill. Now, I just checked a pregnancy test and it’s positive! I’m so scared. I had sex the week after I took the pill, but I haven’t had sex since then. I didn’t use a condom. I didn’t think I could get pregnant so soon. Please help me. Could I be pregnant again?

Answer:

A positive pregnancy test after the abortion pill can be:

Normal
A continuing pregnancy/failed abortion
A new pregnancy
My first question to you would be: Do you have pregnancy symptoms? If you have pregnancy symptoms such as worsening nausea or increasing breast tenderness, these would be signs that the abortion pill didn’t work, or there is a new pregnancy. If you had pregnancy symptoms that decreased after taking the abortion pill, it is most likely that the hormones are normal.

The most likely reason that your pregnancy test is still positive is because you still have hormones present from the pregnancy that you ended. At six weeks of pregnancy, it is common and normal for a urine pregnancy test to stay positive for 2 or 3 weeks after taking the abortion pill. The hormones leave your body slowly. I have seen pregnancy tests remain positive for over a month.   In comparison, the hormones typically decrease quickly with a manual aspiration procedure or with surgical abortion. A pregnancy test will typically turn negative after one or two weeks after an early abortion procedure.

However, it is most important that you follow up with the abortion clinic or doctor’s office where you received the abortion pill. If you had a follow up visit and they said that the pregnancy is over, then you most likely do not need to go back. However, if you did not have a follow up visit, it is important that you go in as soon as possible. It is possible to bleed from the abortion pill and to still have a continuing pregnancy. Only your doctor can give you this information. Call the office, and they should be able to tell you if a continuing pregnancy is possible based on your medical information.

It is unlikely that you got pregnant the week after taking the abortion pill. Typically, pregnancy hormones must decrease to zero before you begin your next cycle and ovulate again. So, it would be very unusual to be fertile and able to conceive only one week later. Usually this happens after two weeks or more. If you didn’t have sex later in the month, most likely this is not a new pregnancy.

I hope this information is helpful to you.
